How A Blood Test Reference Range Is Set
The normal range printed beside a blood result is a statistical description of a reference population, which means healthy people routinely fall outside it.

Blood results arrive with a normal range beside each value. That range is a statistical construct derived from a sample of people, not a boundary between health and illness.
The range describes a middle band
A laboratory measures an analyte in a group of apparently healthy volunteers and observes how the values distribute.
The reference interval is then set to contain the central portion of that distribution, conventionally the middle ninety-five per cent of results.
By construction, one in twenty healthy people falls outside the range on any given test. Being outside it is a common event rather than a rare one.
Multiple tests multiply the chance
A panel measures many analytes at once, and each carries its own independent chance of falling outside its range.
Running a dozen tests on a completely healthy person makes at least one out-of-range value more likely than not.
This is why clinicians read a panel as a pattern rather than scanning for flagged values, and why a single mildly abnormal figure is often repeated rather than acted upon.
Ranges are specific to the laboratory
Different laboratories use different analysers, reagents and methods, and each derives its own reference interval accordingly.
The same sample can therefore produce slightly different numbers and different ranges at two laboratories without either being wrong.
Comparing a result against a range from a different laboratory, or from an internet source, is the most common way people misread their own results.
Who was in the reference group matters
Reference values vary by age, sex, pregnancy, ethnicity and sometimes altitude, and good laboratories publish separate ranges where the difference is material.
Where a single range is used for a diverse population, it fits some groups better than others.
Timing also matters, since some analytes vary through the day, with meals, with hydration and after exercise. Collection conditions are part of the result.
Trend beats a single value
A result drifting steadily within the normal range can be more informative than one sitting slightly outside it and staying put.
This is why previous results are valuable and why clinicians ask about earlier testing rather than treating each sample as isolated.
Interpreting any of this against symptoms and history is clinical work, and a result that concerns you is a reason to ask the requesting clinician rather than to research the number alone.
