Storing Medicines At Home Without Spoiling Them
Heat, humidity and light degrade medicines faster than time alone, which makes the bathroom cabinet the worst common storage place in a house.

Medicine storage instructions look like boilerplate, but temperature and humidity measurably change how quickly a product loses potency. Most homes store medicines in the wrong room.
Heat accelerates chemical breakdown
Chemical reactions speed up as temperature rises, and the reactions that degrade a drug are no exception.
A modest sustained increase in temperature can shorten usable life considerably, which is why stability testing is conducted at controlled temperatures rather than room conditions.
Sunlit windowsills, spaces above radiators, cars and the top of a refrigerator all run warmer than the room they are in, and all are common storage places.
Humidity attacks tablets directly
Many tablets absorb moisture from the air. Water can hydrolyse the active ingredient and can also make the tablet swell, soften or crumble.
The desiccant sachet in some bottles exists for exactly this reason and should stay in the container rather than being discarded as packaging.
A bathroom is the worst room in most houses, since a shower raises humidity and temperature together several times a day. The traditional bathroom medicine cabinet is a poor design.
Light degrades certain products
Some active ingredients are broken down by ultraviolet or visible light, which is why they arrive in amber bottles or opaque packaging.
Decanting such a medicine into a clear container removes that protection, as does leaving strips out on a counter.
Blister packs also protect against moisture and physical damage, so removing tablets in advance to organise a week shortens their life and can remove the label information.
Refrigerated medicines have narrow limits
Products requiring refrigeration usually specify a narrow band, and both ends matter. Freezing damages many of them irreversibly.
The coldest part of a domestic refrigerator is often against the back wall, where items can freeze without appearing to.
The door is the other extreme, cycling in temperature every time the refrigerator is opened, which makes it the least stable location in the appliance.
Access is a safety consideration too
Storage decisions involve keeping medicines away from children and anyone at risk, which sometimes conflicts with keeping them in a cool dry place.
A locked box in a bedroom cupboard usually resolves both, since bedrooms are more stable in temperature than kitchens or bathrooms.
If a medicine has been stored badly or looks or smells different from usual, a pharmacist can advise whether it remains fit to use rather than leaving it to guesswork.
