What Rest Days Actually Do
Adaptation happens between sessions rather than during them, and rest days are the period in which repair, refuelling and nervous system recovery take place.

Rest days are commonly treated as a concession to willpower or a pause in progress. They are the period in which the changes a training session triggered actually occur.
Training is a signal, not a change
A session damages tissue slightly, depletes fuel stores and generates fatigue. None of that is improvement.
The improvement is the body's response to those signals, which involves synthesising new protein, restoring fuel and reinforcing structures that were stressed.
Those processes take place over the hours and days afterwards, so removing the interval removes the adaptation the session was intended to produce.
Different systems recover on different timescales
Muscle glycogen is largely restored within a day given adequate carbohydrate, while muscle protein synthesis continues for considerably longer after demanding work.
Connective tissue remodels more slowly still, over weeks, which is why tendon problems accumulate quietly across a training block.
The nervous system also fatigues, particularly after heavy or highly skilled work, and that fatigue shows up as poor coordination rather than as tired muscles.
Rest can be relative rather than total
A rest day does not require immobility, and light activity increases blood flow without adding meaningful training stress.
Alternating which tissues are stressed achieves something similar, which is why programmes rotate between movement patterns or between hard and easy sessions.
What matters is that the specific tissues loaded heavily get an interval before they are loaded heavily again, not that nothing happens at all.
Accumulated fatigue has recognisable signs
Persistent heaviness, performance falling despite consistent training, disturbed sleep and a loss of motivation are the common indicators.
An elevated resting heart rate over several mornings is another, which is one of the few genuinely useful things a tracker measures.
These signs appear before injury in most cases, which makes them worth attending to rather than overriding.
They are also easy to misattribute, since a period of poor training often coincides with a busy stretch at work and gets blamed on that instead.
Scheduled lighter periods serve the same purpose
Structured programmes include weeks of reduced volume, since fatigue accumulates across a block faster than it can be cleared within it.
These periods often produce a jump in performance afterwards, because accumulated fatigue was masking adaptation that had already occurred.
Anyone training around an injury or a health condition should have rest intervals set with a clinician or a qualified coach rather than by feel alone.
