Why Lens Coatings Cost What They Do
The price of a pair of glasses is dominated by lens material and coatings rather than by the prescription, and each option solves a specific optical problem.

Two pairs of glasses with the same prescription can differ several-fold in price. Almost all of that difference sits in the lens material and the layers applied to its surfaces.
Material determines thickness and weight
Lens materials differ in refractive index, which is how strongly they bend light. A higher index achieves the same power with less curvature and therefore less thickness.
This matters most at strong prescriptions, where a standard material produces lenses thick enough to be heavy, visually obvious and difficult to fit into many frames.
Higher index materials are more expensive to produce and can introduce slight colour fringing at the edges, so the choice is a trade rather than a straightforward upgrade.
Anti-reflective layers address a real optical loss
A proportion of light reflects off each lens surface rather than passing through, which reduces the light reaching the eye and creates visible reflections.
Anti-reflective coatings are extremely thin layers whose thickness is tuned so that reflections from their two boundaries cancel each other out.
The benefit is most noticeable at night and under artificial light, and it also removes the reflections that obscure the wearer's eyes to other people.
Hard coatings compensate for softer materials
Plastic lens materials scratch far more easily than glass, and the higher index materials are generally softer still.
A hard coating is applied to resist that, and on most modern lenses it is standard rather than optional because the lens would be impractical without it.
No coating makes a lens scratch-proof, which is why warranties on this feature are usually limited and why a cloth and case do more than any layer.
Tints and filters do different jobs
Ultraviolet protection is built into many lens materials rather than added as a coating, and it is unrelated to how dark a lens appears.
Photochromic lenses contain compounds that darken on exposure to ultraviolet light, which is why they respond less behind a car windscreen that blocks it.
Polarising filters block light oscillating in one plane, which removes glare reflected from flat surfaces such as water or roads and is a distinct effect from simple tinting.
Where the money is worth spending
The options that address a specific problem you actually experience are the ones that justify their cost, and the rest are indifferent.
Someone driving at night has a clear case for anti-reflective treatment, while someone with a weak prescription gains little from a high index material.
An optometrist or dispensing optician can say which options relate to your prescription and how you use your eyes, which is a better basis than a price list.
