Why Progressive Overload Is The Whole Principle
The body adapts only to demands beyond what it currently handles, which makes gradual increase the mechanism behind every training programme regardless of its style.

Training programmes differ enormously in structure and terminology, and nearly all of them are implementations of one idea: the demand has to keep rising for adaptation to continue.
Adaptation is a response to a specific stress
Tissue adapts to what it is regularly asked to do. Muscle exposed to force it can barely handle responds by becoming better able to handle it.
The signal is the relative difficulty, not the absolute load. A weight that was demanding becomes routine once adaptation occurs, and the signal disappears with it.
This is why an unchanged programme produces rapid early progress and then a plateau, without anything having gone wrong.
The stimulus must exceed current capacity
Work well within current capacity maintains what exists but provides no reason to change, since the body has no incentive to build capacity it is not using.
Work far beyond it exceeds the ability to recover, which produces accumulating fatigue and injury rather than adaptation.
The useful range sits between those, and it moves upward as fitness improves, which is what makes the increase progressive rather than a one-off step.
Judging where that range sits is the practical difficulty, since it cannot be read off a chart and shifts with sleep, stress and how the previous week went.
Load is only one variable that can rise
Increasing weight is the most obvious form, but the same principle applies through repetitions, sets, frequency, range of movement and reduced rest between efforts.
In endurance work the equivalent variables are distance, pace, terrain and the total volume across a week.
Having several variables matters because weight cannot rise indefinitely, and progress continues through the others once it stalls.
Recovery is where adaptation happens
Training provides the stimulus and creates fatigue. The adaptation occurs afterwards, during recovery, provided the recovery is sufficient.
Increasing load faster than recovery capacity allows produces a downward spiral where performance falls despite training more.
This is why programmes include lighter periods, and why sleep and food intake constrain how quickly progression can proceed.
Why progression must be gradual
Different tissues adapt at different rates. Muscle responds relatively quickly, while tendon, ligament and bone remodel considerably more slowly.
Rapid increases produce a period where muscular capacity exceeds connective tissue readiness, which is a common route into overuse injury.
Anyone returning after injury or a long break needs a progression rate set with that mismatch in mind, which is where professional guidance is genuinely useful.
